The Do It Yourself Solar Panel Book. Make Your Own Solar Panels Cheaply.
Solar panels can be expensive. This keeps most people away from setting up solar power for their own use. Retail solar panels normally cost anywhere from $5 per watt up to $10 per watt. We show you how to make your own solar panels for as little as $1 per watt.
Here is our shopping list:
- Tabbed Solar Cells 65 watts (broken) - $29.98 online
- Tabbing Wire 40 ft - $5 online (enough for many panels)
- 2 x 4 ft Wood Back Board - $6 at local home improvement store
- Qty 2, 8ft Pine Furring Strips - $1.50 at home improvement store
- 2 x 4 ft Plexiglas Cover - 23.98 at home improvement store
- White Paint - $3 at local hardware store (enough for multiple panels)
- Screws - $3 at local hardware store
- Silicone Sealant - $1.98 at hardware store ( enough for many panels)
Total Cost = $74.44
This assumes, of course, that you already have a soldering iron and solder. Some of the materials will be enough for multiple solar panels, so the final cost of a single 65 watt solar panel is nearly a dollar per watt. You may be able to get this price down even lower if you have some materials laying around. Salvage some glass for the cover and save 50% on your cost. That can bring you down to only 50 cents per watt! The broken solar cells are just as powerful as whole cells. Get the ones that are just chipped or cracked in the middle and you will have no real loss in power.
You do not need to have any experience to make your own solar panels at home. Just a little bit of mechanical skills working with a hand saw, screw driver, knife and a soldering iron. We even show beginners how to solder, if needed.
